Annemarie Jacir was born in Bethlehem, Palestine, and is one of the most influential Palestinian filmmakers of her generation. She is a writer, director, and producer known for Salt of This Sea (2008), When I Saw You (2012), and Wajib(2017). Her debut feature Salt of This Sea earned a Camera d’Or (Golden Camera) nomination at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008. All three of her feature films were Palestine’s official submissions for the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
In 2018, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) hosted the first major retrospective of her work. Jacir has served on prestigious international juries, including the Un Certain Regard Jury at the Cannes Film Festival (2018) and the International Competition Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival (2020). Her cinema consistently explores themes of displacement, resistance, identity, and Palestinian history through deeply human stories.
