Cherien Dabis is an award-winning Palestinian-American director, writer, and actress, born in Omaha, Nebraska, and raised between the United States, Ohio, and Jordan. She studied film at Columbia University’s School of the Arts and is widely recognized for her powerful storytelling that bridges personal identity with political reality.
Her debut feature Amreeka (2009) premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, along with numerous international awards. The film made history as the most widely screened Arab-directed film in U.S. cinema at the time and earned Dabis a place on Variety’s “Ten Directors to Watch.”
Her second feature, May in the Summer (2013), opened the Sundance Film Festival and premiered internationally at the Venice Film Festival. Dabis is also an acclaimed television director, earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for the innovative episode “The Boy From 6B” of Only Murders in the Building, notable for its near-silent storytelling using ASL and visual language.
She has directed episodes of major series including Ramy, Ozark, and Empire, and continues to work across film, television, writing, and acting. All That’s Left of You marks a return to feature filmmaking with a deeply personal and politically resonant narrative rooted in Palestinian experience.
